Night Food Market & Nyepi(Silent Day) – Day 33

Sindhu Night Market

We visited the delicious and traditional Sindhu Night Food Market.  The heat, the smoke, the smells and the sounds as a sensory overload – but not in an unpleasant way.

As you all know, we love our food.  It was a long, leisurely walk for us as we again walked the coastal walkway to the end so we had a little back tracking to do, and it rained!  After a 10 km walk, we arrived at the market at around 6.30pm.  Rather parched, we first went in search of a good fresh juice bar (of which are common in Bali).  A freshly blitzed Mango Juice and Dragon Juice ($3nz) later and a quick recovery time after the hike, we did the loop of the market a couple of times before deciding on the Mie Ayam Arema – a chicken noodle type soup with a rather weird looking egg ($3nz for 2).

It was full of flavour and packed with all sorts of veges so it was a win.  It’s always a challenge when you don’t really know what you’re getting but that’s all part of the experience.

All up our night our cost us $6nz and we walked back home with full bellies.

Nyepi (Day of Silence)

Nyepi is a Balinese ‘Day of Silence’ that is commemorated every year.  It is a Hindu celebration that occurs only in Bali and has done for hundreds of years.  It is 24 hours of silence, fasting and meditation for the Balinese.  This year it occurs on 28 March, a couple of days after we leave (just as well as those 3 disciplines are certainly not my strongest points – especially the eating and talking!!).

The airport shuts down, no vehicles on the road, shops are shut and everyone’s off the road and should stay indoors.

I do wonder how this will go down in the party areas like Kuta. I hope that the tourists are respectful and can tolerate the inconvenience of not being able to get out and about for 24 hours.

There are celebrations in the lead up however so we headed to the beach to see some of the rituals and festivities surrounding upcoming Nyepi.
