Lovina

Moving on

We wanted to visit Lovina as part of our journeys across the top of the north of Bali.  We booked for two nights on booking.com at the Angsoka Hotel.

It is an aging hotel so it does have it’s minuses but let’s look at the positives:

A/c worked (a bit of a rattle but nothing that earplugs couldn’t fix), nice large pool, only $22 per night including breakfast but best of all is it’s location.  Like Pemuteran, the main road to the ferry terminal to Java passes through and you don’t want to be anywhere that road with the constant trucks, vans, buses and of course scooters.  Our hotel is in the tourist area very close to the Dolphin Statue which I the hub of the town.  This is where the locals and tourists gather especially in the evenings to watch the sunsets.

Lovina is popular for a number of tourist attractions which include dolphin watching, Holy Hot Springs, waterfalls and it’s laid back village vibe.  We had already seen all of the attractions and we did enough dolphin watching at home so we were happy to be moving on after our two night stay.

When you hear talk about it being the ‘quiet time’ in the tourist season, they aren’t kidding.  Lovina was nearly deserted although it has worked well in our favour.  The resorts and restaurants have only a smattering of visitors and beaches are empty.  However this does mean that the hawkers are out in force trying to make a buck out of any tourists wandering around.

It would be fair to say that at one point I did feel a bit uncomfortable where we seem to have 3 of them circling us whilst one of them was trying to make polite conversation.  All this going on while trying to catch the sunset.  I did feel thankful that I had my tough burley kiwi guy beside me (aka Scotty) and he was way bigger than all of them.  We just quickly got up and moved on – no problem.  It is certainly all about being aware of your surrounds all the time.
