Krabi City – More Than a One Night Stand

Worth a Few Extra Nights

Many travellers pass through Krabi city as quickly as possible, seeing it as nothing more than a transit spot for onward travel to Ko Phi Phi, Ko Lanta or Ao Nang.

However, we did some research and came to the conclusion that before we dash off to the beach, we’d give this city a chance and see what was on offer for us.

This riverside city worked its magic and we were rewarded with cheap but fabulous local food, a relaxed atmosphere and several worthwhile attractions.

It’s true that the city doesn’t seem like much at first glance, considering some of the world’s best beaches is an easy boat ride away, it’s easy to see why the city gets overlooked.

If Night Markets Are Your Thing…….

Then this city would need to be high on the list for a visit.  We counted 3 night markets within a few blocks of where we stayed at Lada Krabi Express Hotel.

At the heart of Krabi city, the Maharaj Market is lined with hundreds of authentic curries, soups, fried fishes and chilli pastes.

Roti and Curry

I’m not a curry fan but I have converted to a full on curry lover – my favourite being the aromatic Massaman.

We would then love to finish the meal with a banana roti, made fresh to order or maybe even mango and sticky rice.

More Than Just Food

We hired a longtail boat to explore the nearby caves and surrounding mangrove forests.

The main cave is thought to have served as a shelter for prehistoric humans and also provided shelter to the Japanese army during World War 2.  At the entrance to the cave is a complete skeleton – 43,000 years old according to the sign.

In the centre of the city is the stunning white Wat Kaew, built to house the monks.  While the outside of the structure has a modern edge, the inside is more traditional with wall murals and dark crimson ceiling.

Enjoy our video of our travels so far in Krabi.  There is more to come on this enchanting southern Thailand city.
